Zagori, dotted with villages and dozens of large and small rivers that divide them, literally identified with its stone bridges that they built notorious masters and are now ornaments landscape. Each of them with its own personality and history, matched in position and offered his services for hundreds of years before the needs of residents change. Old stone bridges were full of walkers, riders, hawkers, peddlers and craftsmen who used them daily for their movements. And because the canyons where the bridges are often strong winds blow, the biggest of them used to hang a bell bottom that warned passers if the pass was dangerous.
Entire studies, books, lectures and photographic collections have been made for the stone bridges in Zagoria. The bridges are built during the 18th and 19th century, the time of flowering of Zagori, with funding of neighboring villages or wealthy residents or immigrants, from whom they took their name. It is built by teams of skilled craftsmen who went from place to place, where there was an order for them to build the bridge and, depending on the particular characteristics of each sign, they did arched, double-arched or Tritoxo. We are lucky, because those masters knew their craft well and so most are rescued, not by our own renovations, but with their own power of resistance to snow, the rapids, the wars and time.
Some of the most famous bridges are:
- The Bridge or Bridge Voidomati Kleidonia
- The Bridge of Vovousa
